What ETIM xChange is

ETIM International previously recommended BMEcat as the exchange format for classified product data. With ETIM xChange there is now a standard of its own: the first product master data exchange format fully controlled by ETIM International and its community, designed for global use. A dedicated subcommittee of the ETIM Technical Committee is responsible for its further development.

JSON: ETIM xChange is JSON-based. A JSON schema is used to validate the files.
GS1 identifiers: items are identified by their GTIN, locations by their GLN.
Environmental and packaging data: since version 2.0 the format includes extended fields for environmental data (LCA/EPD) and an element for packaging material data.

Versions

The current version is ETIM xChange 2.0, officially released by ETIM International in November 2025. The first version, 1.0, was published in February 2024. The complete documentation is available for download from ETIM International.

What about BMEcat?

ETIM International provides a mapping of ETIM xChange fields to ETIM BMEcat fields as far as possible. In some countries, sector-specific national formats are also used alongside ETIM xChange and BMEcat. We will work out with you which format your customers expect.

Plan the switch: we review your existing BMEcat and product data and show what is missing for ETIM xChange.
Create the files: we create your ETIM xChange files, alongside your existing BMEcat if you wish.
Set up processes: we put the workflows in place with you so that you can deliver your data in ETIM xChange yourself in future.
